Information
Character Name: Hibari Kyouya
Series: Katekyo Hitman Reborn!
Point in Canon: I’m going to say he was about eighteen when he was taken
Affiliation: Echo Force
Code Name: Sparrow
Length of time character has been in the setting: Hibari’s about twenty-seven now, which would put him as being here nine years.
Background: Hibari was the head of the Disciplinary Committee of Namimori Junior High and ruled the city at large with a number of violent and underhanded means; he was a veritable terror, feared by the student population for his violent punishments for rule-breakers. Through the machinations of Reborn, the home tutor for the next boss of the Vongola Mafia family, Hibari was ‘introduced’ (violently) to Tsuna and co., the people who would eventually become his famiglia. Hibari maintained an interest in Tsuna, but mostly in Reborn, whose strength intrigued him.
When an escaped mafia convict named Rokudo Mukuro began causing trouble in Namimori, Hibari took it upon himself to investigate and was subsequently captured and held prisoner while Tsuna’s group fought their way into Mukuro’s hideout. It was at this time that Hibari tamed a small yellow bird, Hibird, away from the opposition. He was eventually freed from his captivity, and though he was heavily wounded he assisted Tsuna is defeating Mukuro. Likewise, he was later recruited to be the Vongola’s Cloud Guardian during the battle against the Varia for the Vongola rings, the items that would secure the next heir and his guardians. Hibari was convinced to accept the ring and the role after being defeated by Dino, a tutor hand-picked by Reborn to train him.
Soon after Tsuna was transported ten years into the future, where he met the older version of Hibari, who had spent the time leading up to his intro researching the mysterious ‘box weapons’. It was also revealed that this older Hibari had been plotting with the older Tsuna and the older Irie Shouichi to bring down Byakuran, the powerful and sinister head of the Millefiore family. Eventually older Hibari is replaced by the younger Hibari, who joins the rest of the younger versions in fighting the Millefiore.
Since Hibari was eighteen when he was taken, the business with the Millefiore would have already been concluded.
Personality: Hibari has always ruled his surroundings utterly with his strength and will power; whatever did not conform to his rules was summarily bitten to death without regard to circumstance or mercy. While Hibari is still domineering, maturity has smoothed over his tendency toward impulsive violence and given him patience--not much, as he will quickly demonstrate with enough provocation--and more room to tolerate other people. Crowding and mingling together will still provoke a violent reaction, but there’s a possibility of a warning before, rather than after, he bites the participants to death. He has a naturally quiet nature, and his violence is partially to create an atmosphere of order and tranquility around him.
His violent tendencies aside, Hibari is well-spoken and well-kept and generally gives the impression of a perfectly respectable and proper businessman--which he is. The perceptiveness and ruthlessness he has showed in battle serve him well in his financial and academic pursuits, allowing him successful in a short time. His violent tendencies not aside Hibari is still bloodthirsty, always looking for a strong opponent. He will never back down from a challenge or a show of strength and he will fight until the bitter end, past the point of consciousness, to win. When a strong opponent is found, Hibari can become obsessive in his pursuit of them. He will never willingly admit defeat.
Part of Hibari’s fiercely independent nature is that he works on a strict system of favors--he loves to collect them, but hates owing them, and he will never let a debt owed go forgotten, especially one owed by him.
Day to day, Hibari is, really, mostly kind of bored. He likes taking naps with his bird, sometimes in unconventional places, and reading. His intense love for his old school and Town, Namimori, persists and in his down time he stalks to halls of Namimori University and maintains the treasured discipline.
AU Background and Personality: Hibari arrived nine years ago, when he was eighteen, and from the very start he wanted nothing to do with either Echo Force or the Russians--not even being spatially and temporally displaced could make him want to crowd together with herbivores who needed others to fight their own wars or incompetents who could not fix a simple machine. However, he needed access to the Rasputin machine, and thus ended up joining quite against his will, though fighting against the Russians who had dragged him from his beloved Namimori was certainly a bonus. Between missions for Echo Force he attended a prestigious American college, graduated in two years, and in another two years obtained his Doctorate in thaumaturgical engineering. He immediately set about founding the University of Namimori, a college specifically created to research the Rasputin machine and similar technologies. He funded its construction with dirty money he obtained through extortion, information brokering, stocks, and several other mostly illegal methods. He is now self-employed as the dean of the college, which has been open barely two years, but still works for Echo Force when they call him in.
Due to his position and renown, Hibari conducts himself in a more subdued manner. Rather than actual violence, he mostly uses the threat of imminent death, which works just as well considering the amount of killing intent rolling off him even on a good day. He takes his job, both as the dean and an Echo Force agent with utmost professionalism and dedication, even if he doesn’t particularly like being an agent.
Sample Post:
There was no part of being a secret agent that Hibari did not dislike. First of all, the very name was repugnant--‘secret’. It smacked of cowardice, even if it was entirely incorrect: The Russians did not know his name, but they knew who he was, and they feared him accordingly. ‘Agent’ was no better; it made him a representative of a larger group, forced him to crowd together like a small animal with those in the organization, and the word acknowledged the fact that he had to take orders from someone else.
It was not a fact Hibari liked being reminded of.
There was also an implied level of subtly that Hibari disdained. It was not that he couldn’t be quiet--he was fully capable of dispatching targets noiselessly--but slaughtering sheep with their backs turned was not something Hibari wanted to waste his time with. Not that it would matter much which direction they were facing.
And this is why Echo Force did not often call upon him: He still did things in his own way and at his own pace. He could never be called insubordinate; he always fell within the parameters of the mission. So when his orders said to obtain a certain piece of intelligence ‘quietly’, Hibari proceeded quietly.
The scream of the guard he took out wasn’t quiet, and nor was the gunshot he managed to get off (sloppy, on Hibari’s behalf), but Hibari was very quiet when he casually smashed the man’s windpipe. He caught the gun before it clattered to the floor and emptied the rest of the clip into the ceiling which was, well, not quiet, but that was fine. Within a minute the rest of the small compound’s staff would be there, charging at him like a herd of wildebeasts. Herbivores. He’d bite them all to death and then there would be no-one to say if it had been noisy or quiet, anyway.
